Community Courses for Professional

Enrollment is limited to ten people for each class. Participants who own personal lap tops are welcomed to bring their own computers if their computers are loaded with proper course software in Windows XP or Vista. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator is required for all who want to enroll in the Desktop Publishing course. General computer knowledge or completion of TWC’s Introduction to Computers & The Internet is required for all courses. All courses run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on scheduled days.

Introduction to Computers & The Internet

This eight-hour course provides a basic introduction to the world of computers. The course is specifically friendly to pre-digitals (those born before 1980). You will learn to control your computer, and not be afraid of it. You will lose your fear of computing. You will learn about and understand basic elements of the Windows and Vista operating systems, including its Internet components. You will learn to set up and create documents in MS Word, create files and folders, save documents in specified folders, and organize your computer so that you know where your things are. You will begin to understand your control panel, so that you can install (or uninstall) printers, copies, telephones, cameras, and new programs. You will understand how to protect your privacy. You will learn to set up email accounts, send emails, send text messages, and actually communicate with your children and grandchildren. Guaranteed.

Writing in Microsoft Word for Beginners

This eight-hour course will familiarize you with the basic components of Microsoft Word. You will learn to set up, format, prepare, organize, and save documents. You will learn to use a variety of different typefaces (fonts), and to make your type large or small, bold, italic, underlined, and/or colored. You will learn to use the spell checker, thesaurus, and grammar tools. You will learn to use MS Word as a text editor for your emails. We will cover all areas of interest to each student in this course. If you are not presently using your computer, this course will be a gateway to a new world of connections. Have you wondered why your children and grandchildren are not writing you? In this course, you will find the reason, and a remedy.

Business Writing in Microsoft Word

In this eight hour course, we will provide a brief overview of MS Word, before introducing you to the exciting business tools in the program, such as mail merge, sorting, autocorrect options, and wizards. This course will also focus attention on grammar, composition, styles of business writing, the use and/or creation of templates. The course will provide the resources you need for creating and writing memos, emails, forms, business letters, resumes, and reports.

Introduction to Adobe Photoshop

This program is enormously versatile and powerful. It is useful not only for photograph manipulation and storage, but also for integrating photographic and other art in your documents, advertisements, marketing materials, web pages, e-mails, and on-line and print communications. In this eight hour course, you will learn the basics of setting up files, importing objects from other files (such as those on your cell phone), enlarging and reducing images, cropping images, layering, altering photographs, creating new art, and creating special effects. You will learn which type files (EPS, GIF, JPEG) are appropriate for different media and you will also learn to make photograph albums and compact discs (CDs).

Introduction to Adobe Illustrator

This program correlates well with Adobe Photoshop. It is useful for creating illustrations and graphic art. In this eight hour course, you will learn to produce original digital art for print, web, and other applications. You will learn to integrate art and text to produce marketing, advertising, and other forms of communication. You will be impressed by the numerous tools available for shaping and re-shaping art and text, and for shading, grading, illuminating, and coloring images. Adobe Illustrator provides several formats for saving and storing images, most of which are compatible with Adobe Photoshop files.

Desktop Publishing

In this sixteen hour course, you will be exposed to design fundamentals, and you will use your knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to create books, booklets, pamphlets, advertisements, brochures, church bulletins, newsletters and other print material. You also learn to create files for websites. Prerequisite: knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator.
